Fun in Texas, Day 3

Our final day in Texas, Joel took us to San Antonio. We had so much fun. We saw the Alamo and walked down the Riverwalk. We really didn't have time to do too much, but we still had fun.

Fun in Texas, Day 2

Our next day visiting, Joel had to go to school. So Sam, LeighAnn, and I packed up the kids and headed out for lunch at Whole Foods and then on to the Austin Zoo. The Austin Zoo is rather small compared to big city zoo's and not too fancy. It's actually a sanctuary for these animals. It's a place where unwanted animals can go and be well taken care of. They were fun to see though. There was everything from lions, tigers, bears, and monkeys, to peacocks, vultures, incredibly large tortoises, and parrots. There was a train ride that we took and we saw some great views of downtown Austin. Wild chickens ran free at the zoo, so we had to be careful not to get in their way. Logan and Bailey seemed to be rather fascinated by the animals that they saw. There were lots of squeals of delight from both babies. It is so much fun to watch how they react to things. I love it! I think that the best part for all of us though were the parrots. They would say the most random things. One bird would say "hello" in many different pitches. At first I thought it was a nice old man, and then a lady, saying hello to us, but when I looked around, all I could find was the bird. Two parrots were absolutely hilarious though. They said things like "polly want a cracker" and "hello brad" and then they would work together and make the Tarzan sounds. It was hysterical.

Fun in Texas, Day 1

Sam and I decided to go to Austin, TX to visit his brother and sister-in-law for a couple of days. We flew down on Nov. 1 and came home Nov. 5. We had a good time and enjoyed visiting Joel, LeighAnn, and Bailey. Logan had a fun time hanging out with his cousin, just 4 months younger. The two of them were so cute together. I think Bailey had the most fun attacking Logan by jumping on his back and trying to grab at him whenever she could. Poor Logan, he never really figured out that if he wanted to avoid getting attacked, all he had to do was crawl away.

Our first day in Austin was pretty laid back. We slept in as much as Logan would allow us, and just hung out in the morning. LeighAnn made an awesome suggestion of going for a picnic in a park. So we packed up some food and headed outside. We drove to a park that had those water fountains that kids can run through. We spent a good amount of time there and even let Logan and Bailey play in the water...well, as much as they would allow anyway. It was so much fun to watch them. I can't wait until Logan is actually able to walk/run through the water instead of just standing there, or trying to crawl without putting his knees on the ground. :) It amazed me that in November, kids were playing in water. We had nice mid 80 degree weather while we were in Austin. I enjoyed every minute of it, knowing that we would be heading back to rain and cold in just a few days. After the park we made our way to the State Capitol building. It was amazing. The grounds were gorgeous and the building itself was gorgeous. I'm thinking that by this point in the day, all the kids wanted to do was go home and take a nap, but they were good anyway for us. After the Capitol, we went back home and let the kids rest. When they woke up from their naps, it seemed that they found each other to be rather hilarious. No matter what Logan did, Bailey would laugh like crazy, and vice versa. Here is a cute video of the two cousins having fun.

Logan's 1st Plane Ride

Well, the flights to and from Austin were somewhat of a success. Although, Sam and I agreed that we would never do that again with an infant. We got lucky on a couple of flights and were able to take his carseat on to the plane with us. It didn't help all that much, except for when he took a nap. But those didn't last too long. He did really well at playing peek-a-boo with other passengers and the flight attendants. He was able to keep himself somewhat entertained, but we did have some meltdowns. Luckily, Logan is a daddy's boy and Sam was able to calm him down quite easily.

We did have some problems with the flights themselves though. When we arrived at Salt Lake from Seattle, we were told that we couldn't leave the plane because TSA had said that there was a security breech at SeaTac and we would have to be rescreened. Well, this was not good news since we had a connecting flight in a half hour. After waiting 15 minutes, we were able to get off the plane in the International Terminal where ALL the baggage was unloaded. We had to find our baggage and take it to be rescreened and hope that it would make it on to our next flight. We were certain that we were going to miss the connection and there were no other flights to Austin until the next day. We were at a loss. We ran as fast as we could to the other side of the airport and got to the gate, only to be told we were at the wrong one. We ran to the correct gate and were told that they were just about to leave. We were let in through the doors and told to go to door 20. WHAT??? Apparently our connecting flight was one of those planes were you board from the outside. Yes, a tiny jet. Fun Fun. As our luck would have it, door 20 was at the opposite end of where we were, so we started running again. We got to the door and it was closed and locked. We started yelling for help. We could see the pilot and he saw us. We were banging on the door to be let in as we saw the plane get ready for taxiing to the runway. Luckily, one of the workers outside saw us and opened the door, we again, ran up the ramp and onto the plane. Phew!! We finally made it and as soon as we were seated, the plane left the gate. Talk about being right on time!

The flight home was not as exciting. We did run into snow at SLC, but it wasn't too bad. We were delayed a bit and had to get the plane de-iced before we took off, but Logan seemed to enjoy watching things from the window. There were lots of "oohs", "ahhs", and "wows" from Logan.

My heart goes out to all of you moms and dads who have to fly with young children. Sam and I knew it would be rough, but we never realized just what it took. And we only have the one kid. Needless to say, we probably won't be doing this again, at least not until Logan is old enough to sit and watch a video for the flight. :)
